How To Buy Invitations For Your Destination Wedding

How To Buy Invitations For Your Destination Wedding

Every wedding has a lot of moving parts, but none quite like a destination wedding. Communicating all of the necessary information to your guests is crucial, and your first line of communication is your wedding invitation! So how do you figure out which items should be included in your destination wedding invitation and when to send them? We’ve put together this brief guide to help you create the perfect invitation for your destination wedding.

Destination Wedding Invitation Timeline

Destination weddings require a lot more planning on your guests' part, so it’s important to give them as much time as possible to make their arrangements. Because of this, we recommend a more advanced timeline for sending your invitations.

Save The Dates are especially crucial for destination weddings, and we recommend sending them out 10-12 months before the event. This gives guests ample time to prepare things such as taking time off of work, budgeting, and even starting on their travel arrangements.

We recommend you order your wedding invitations 5 - 6 months before your destination wedding. This will allow you time to stuff and address them before mailing them at the 4-month mark.

We also recommend setting the RSVP date a bit earlier than traditional invitations, around 6 - 8 weeks before your wedding. This will allow you time to finalize everything with your wedding vendors and confirm that all of your attending guests have everything that they need for your big day.

Destination Wedding Invitation Details

In addition to requiring a unique timeline, invitations for destination weddings will require some information that isn’t as commonly seen for local wedding celebrations. While some of this information can be shared on your wedding website – such as travel information and packing essentials – others may feel more appropriately shared via a detail card in the invitation suite.

One of the most common things we see shared on destination wedding invitations is the dress code. Whether you opt for Resort Casual or Tropical Chic, it’s best to outline the expectations for your guests. If your wedding is on the beach, it’s also a good idea to give your guests a heads-up so they can plan for appropriate footwear.

Additionally, we recommend that couples opt for an invitation suite that reflects the overall colors for the weekend, so guests can have an idea of what colors they should reach for when planning their outfits.

The other item we recommend including in your destination wedding invitation suite is an enclosure card featuring the weekend itinerary. Since destination weddings are usually more than a one-day celebration, we think it's always a good idea to outline the overall activities for the weekend so guests have an idea of what to expect. This also allows them to book their travel for the correct times and make it to all of the events throughout the weekend!
