How Many Wedding Invitations to Order

How Many Wedding Invitations to Order

Throughout the wedding planning process there will be many questions that never even crossed your mind. For example, how many wedding invitations do I need to order?

What may seem like an obvious answer actually requires a bit of calculation. If you order too few invitations, you’ll need to place an additional order, which means additional setup, printing, and shipping costs. On the other hand, ordering too many wastes money that could be better used elsewhere in the budget. Follow our guide below for the best estimate so you know exactly how many wedding invitations to order.

Ordering Wedding Invitations

A mistake we often see couples make is ordering one wedding invitation per guest. This is far too many invitations and will often leave you with dozens that will go to waste. Instead, aim for one invitation per household, plus 25.

In most cases, each guest household should receive only one invitation. This can be addressed to the couple or the entire family. The only exception to this rule would be if any adult children live at the address, in which case they should receive their own invitation.

We recommend ordering an additional 25 wedding invitations for a variety of reasons. First, we recommend having 15 - 20 extras in case of damage or mailing issues or if you need to expand your guest list for any reason. Two copies of your wedding invitation should be set aside for your photographer to take detailed shots of on your wedding day. And finally, we recommend saving 2 - 3 copies for yourself. These can be preserved in an album or framed as a memento.
