How To Assemble Wedding Invitations

How To Assemble Wedding Invitations

Picking out your wedding invitations is a fun and rewarding process. But what about actually sending them out? As with most things in the wedding world, there’s a “correct” way to assemble wedding invitations, but most of us would have no idea what that is. As the resident experts in wedding stationery, we at Lily & Ro Co. have created this quick and concise guide to walk you through the invitation assembly process. Don’t forget to share with your engaged friends!

Invitation Suite Pieces

Main Invitation

The main invitation card contains all the most important information regarding the wedding. This is what most people think of when we talk about wedding invitations. It should include who is getting married, when, and where. It can vary in size, shape, and style but will always be the core piece of a wedding invitation suite.

Main Invitation Envelope

The main invitation envelope encloses all the items in your invitation suite. This is the envelope that will be addressed to your guests and include any necessary postage.

Enclosure Cards

If you choose to include any additional cards in your invitation suite, such as an itinerary or travel information, these cards are categorized as “enclosure cards.” Enclosure cards can contain any important information you want to communicate to your guests and are available in a variety of sizes.

Response Card

Response cards or RSVP cards are small cards with spots for guests to fill out to let you know if they will be attending the wedding. Traditionally, these are returned to the couple by mail. Alternatively, if you prefer for your guests to RSVP online, you can include a response card with information on how to access the wedding website to RSVP.

Response Envelope

If you use a traditional mailed response card, you will need to provide a self-addressed envelope with paid postage, known as a response envelope. These envelopes tend to be small and only require a forever stamp for postage.

If you choose an online response card, then response envelopes are not necessary and will not be included in your suite because there is no need for guests to mail back their response.

Embellishments

Embellishments are any decorative addition you include in your stationery suite. Most commonly, these include vellum wraps, belly bands, wax seals, or ribbons.

How to Assemble Wedding Invitations

  1. Create an assembly line. Lay out all the cards and embellishments in stacks. All pieces should be added with the printed side up unless otherwise specified.

  2. Lay the main invitation on the bottom.

  3. Add the enclosure cards on top, from largest to smallest.

  4. Next, lay the response card envelope on top (printed side down, flap on the right).

  5. Add the response card tucked under the envelope flap.

  6. Wrap the stack in a belly band or vellum wrap and seal.

  7. Add decorative ribbon or wax seal.

  8. Stuff the main envelope by inserting the assembled suite left edge first.

  9. If using a double envelope, insert the inner envelope with the names facing up so they will be visible when guests open the outer envelope.

Tips for Assembling Your Wedding Invitations

Assembling wedding invitations can take longer than you would expect. We recommend starting early and giving yourself at least a week to complete. Or, if you’re crunched for time, invite your wedding party over to help! Just be sure to keep the wine and snacks away from the invites!

Some other things to remember:

  • If you have a traditional response card envelope, don't forget to include a stamp on the envelope before adding it.

  • Adding ribbon? Tie the knot as flat as possible to avoid trouble at the post office.

  • If using a wax seal, we recommend using it to seal the vellum wrap. This way it is protected inside the envelope and less likely to sustain damage during the mailing process.
